Networking, also known as computer networking, enables different devices to stay connected to one another either physically or through wireless technology. It is an essential function across businesses and individuals, as it helps one communicate and share information and resources with others. Not just a lucrative career choice, networking is a crucial component of understanding how the exchange of data works to enable communication and collaboration. Here are key things to know:

Purpose
Typically, computer networking refers to interconnected devices that can exchange data and other resources with one another. In most cases, these devices follow a set of standard rules, known as communication protocols, to transmit information using wireless technology. However, computer networks offer more than connectivity. Now, these network solutions have become critical not only for the day-to-day functioning of businesses but also for their growth and success.

Types
Networking is incredibly important for a business’s day-to-day operations, even for simple everyday tasks such as downloading attachments and printing documents. So, now to provide a better understanding of how networking works, here are some types of networks and their purpose:

Personal area network (PAN): This is one of the most basic forms of networking, referring to the connection of individual computers, wireless modems, printers, and mobile devices. As a PAN usually revolve around the devices of a single person, the user has to manage the services using a single device. So, PAN is common among households and small businesses.

Local area network (LAN): Local area networks are the most commonly used types, as they are extremely simple. LAN generally connects a group of computers and other low-voltage devices. But this network only works over short distances, like a group of buildings located close to each other. However, with the help of routers, one can use LAN to connect to a wide area network. This is done to ensure the rapid and safe transmission of data between devices.

Wireless local area network (WLAN): WLAN is quite similar to LAN, but unlike the latter, which calls for networking accessories such as cables and switches to be connected, WLAN makes use of wireless technology to enable connectivity.

Wide area network (WAN): This can be more complicated than LAN, as WAN allows devices like computers to stay remotely connected to each other even if they are miles apart. The most basic example of this is the Internet which connects computers and other devices around the world.

Virtual private networks (VPN): A VPN works by allowing users to share data and other resources as if they were connected to a private network. In most cases, this is done through a virtual connection that allows users to connect remotely.

Further, to utilize these networking types, one must have the necessary networking equipment, which includes a router, bridge, gateway, hub, modem, and repeater.
