Nasal polyps – Symptoms, causes, and management options

Victor Perez

Benign growth of the tissues lining the nose and sinuses is known as nasal polyps. These frequently take the form of clusters and have a teardrop shape. Small nasal polyps may not cause any symptoms. The larger ones, or those in groups, can obstruct the nasal passages, lead to breathing trouble, impair the sense of smell, and cause recurrent infections. They are more common in those with asthma, allergies, or nasal irritation. The symptoms of nasal polyps can be reduced with treatment.

Symptoms
Nasal polyps are frequently accompanied by chronic sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus, and nasal mucosa. The following signs & symptoms of nasal polyp are common among affected people:

  • Runny nose
This condition may be persistent, making the patient feel like they are constantly contagious.
  • Postnasal drip
A feeling of mucus continuously trickling down the back of the throat.
  • Persistent stuffy or blocked nose
In some situations, the patient may have trouble breathing through their nose, which may interfere with their ability to sleep.
  • No sense of smell
After polyps are treated, one may still have a poor or nonexistent sense of smell.
  • No sense of taste
Taste problems may not get better when polyps are treated.

Other symptoms are snoring, irritation near the eyes, facial pain, and headache.

Causes
Scientists still haven’t found out the natural causes of nasal polyps, why some people experience chronic inflammation, or why a few only experience discomfort and swelling before developing the growth.

Chronic rhinosinusitis, an inflammation of the nasal passages and sinuses lasting 12 weeks or longer, is linked to the development of nasal polyps. However, research indicates that those impacted, as opposed to those who do not, may have an aberrant immune response and distinct chemical markers in their mucus membrane, which lines the sinuses and nasal cavities. These chemical markers function as signals that let the body know what the antigens are and how to respond. Research is urgently needed in this dynamic area.

Treatment option
Prescription
A nasal corticosteroid spray will likely be the first course of action in nasal polyp treatment. This will help to reduce the size of the polyp or make it disappear entirely. Some people need to use corticosteroids for a week.

Surgery
Large nasal polyps might occasionally prevent treatment from working. In such a situation, surgery might be an option. The licensed professional will use a tiny nasal telescope to remove nasal polyps.

Humidifier
A humidifier is one of the great remedies for nasal polyps. This will aid in moistening the nasal passages when the surrounding air becomes dry, particularly in cold and dry climates. This enhances the flow of mucus in the sinuses, preventing blockage and inflammation that could result in the recurrence of nasal polyps.

Nasal spray
The nasal passages are kept moist, and inflammation is reduced with the use of nasal sprays and rinses. Wash the sinus and nasal cavities with a sterile saline solution to ensure optimal healing.

Spicy foods
Eating spicy food produces a variety of bodily processes and reactions. One of these side effects is a stuffy nose. Spicy food can cause a runny nose, clearing any internal blockages. Chili, hot sauce, and ginger are some foods that help with nasal polyps.
