Important elements of multiple sclerosis

Victor Perez

Several sensory and motor problems are associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease affecting the central nervous system. In this condition, the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective myelin sheath that surrounds the neurons in the brain and the spinal cord. It leads to deterioration or death of nerve cells. This damage slows or stops nerve transmission from the brain to other body parts. Some people may lose the ability to walk or move.

Multiple sclerosis signs and symptoms
The signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis may differ depending on the location and severity of nerve damage in the central nervous system.

  • Numbness and tingling
Numbness or tingling is one of the earliest signs of multiple sclerosis, and it typically occurs on one side of the body.
  • Eye problems
There might be complete or partial loss of vision, usually in one eye. Other problems associated with MS include blurry vision, double vision, or pain while moving the eyes.
  • Muscle weakness
Due to nerve damage, there may be muscle weakness in the arms or legs. People with MS may also feel mild stiffness or painful spasms in the leg muscles.
  • Bladder and bowel issues
People with MS may have the urge to pee more frequently or may have trouble emptying the bladder. Constipation may also be an issue with MS.
  • Lack of coordination
People with MS may experience a loss of balance and may find it hard to get around.
  • Dizziness
Dizziness is a common problem with MS.
  • Fatigue
Multiple sclerosis also causes sleepiness and tiredness even after a good night’s sleep.
  • Tremors
Most people with MS may experience minor shakes or intense tremors.

Multiple sclerosis causes
The cause of multiple sclerosis is not yet discovered. However, researchers believe that it occurs due to an autoimmune reaction. Some of the risk factors of MS are:

  • Exposure to viruses
Being exposed to viruses or bacteria may increase the risk of developing MS.
  • Environment
The place where you live can also increase the risk of this disease. Multiple sclerosis occurs more frequently in people who live farther from the equator. These regions receive less sun and have low levels of vitamin D.
  • Autoimmune disorders
The risk increases when people have other autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis, thyroid disease, or pernicious anemia.
  • Genetics
Though multiple sclerosis is not inherited, certain genes may increase the risk of developing this condition.

Multiple sclerosis treatment
There is no definitive cure for multiple sclerosis, but natural treatments can help manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life. Here are some of the multiple sclerosis remedies that can be helpful.

  • Include anti-inflammatory foods
Foods to help with multiple sclerosis include fatty fish, avocados, olive oil, flaxseeds, and walnuts. These have anti-inflammatory properties that can potentially slow MS progression.
  • Regular exercise
Exercising daily can help relieve fatigue and stiffness caused by MS. Aerobic exercises or strength training can help improve muscle tone, balance, and coordination.
  • Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient practice that can be beneficial for relieving pain or stiffness associated with MS. It can also help with numbness and bladder problems.
  • Stress management
Stress can worsen MS-related symptoms. Therefore, it is important to manage stress through ways such as meditation, yoga, aromatherapy, etc.

Though it is challenging to live with multiple sclerosis, most people have a close to normal life expectancy. With appropriate treatment and a healthy lifestyle, a person with this disease can live life independently.
