Ear care is often an overlooked aspect of overall healthcare. However, it is extremely crucial to protect the ears against damage and hearing loss. Taking proper care of the organs by following good hygiene practices can lower the risk of common ear problems causing aches and changes in hearing. So, here are a few essential things to know about common issues and how to avoid them through comprehensive ear care:

Common ear problems
Earwax buildup : An accumulation of earwax in the ear is a common problem that everyone experiences. However, excessive buildup, if unchecked, can cause temporary hearing loss, ear infections, and discomfort.

Ear infections : Those who are frequently exposed to water or experience recurring bouts of flu or cold are highly susceptible to ear infections. For example, otitis media or middle ear infections and external ear infections like swimmer’s ear are commonly observed in children and adults who spend a lot of time in public swimming pools.

Tinnitus : This condition causes a persistent buzzing or ring sound in the ears. Tinnitus can develop due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds, severe ear infection, aging, or other underlying disorders.

Hearing loss : This is a common ear problem that can be a temporary condition (when caused by exposure to loud noises) or a permanent issue (brought on by aging or other disorders).

Ear care tips
A few ear problems like permanent hearing loss due to health disorders or aging cannot be prevented. However, other issues like ear infections can be avoided to an extent by following a few ear care tips.

Ensure regular cleanup: One should gently clean the outer area of the ears using a damp cloth. It is important to avoid inserting anything inside the ear canal, as this may push the wax in and cause injury.

Get earwax removed by professionals: Sometimes, one can have excessive wax buildup, which can increase the risk of temporary hearing loss, infection, or other problems. Here, one should seek professional help from an ear care doctor for the removal of earwax.

Protect the ears: Keeping the ears safe from exposure to loud noises is a key preventive measure. One can wear protective gear such as earmuffs or earplugs at concerts and construction sites or while using any noisy machines such as drills, saws, or weed removal machines.

Keep the ears dry: Dry the inside and outside of the ear thoroughly after swimming, showering, or bathing can prevent infections. One can use a soft towel or a hair dryer at the minimum setting to dry out any moisture.

Avoid using cotton swabs: One should avoid using cotton swabs to clean the insides of the ear. These can push the wax further in and cause damage.

Key ear care products
It is useful to keep a few essential ear care products at home. One can invest in the following items:

  • Earwax removal drops
  • Earplugs
  • Ear drying aids
  • Ear care kits

If one experiences persistent ear problems, they need to consult an ear care doctor or an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). A great way to find the right doctor is by asking a primary care doctor for recommendations.
